Exped Lyra II: Product test

Exped Lyra II

Test environment:

We were able to use the Lyra II extensively over the past few months and test it in various scenarios. The area of use was consistently mountainous landscapes, above the timberline.

The tent was tested at temperatures between 13°c and -5°c. We took it with us on longer trekking weekends in the Swiss Alps. It was used both in fair weather and in heavy rain and wind.

Exped Tribe rating: 87/100

Exped Lyra II

PRO:

πŸ–’ Feather light two persons trekking tent (only 2Kg!)

πŸ–’ Small pack size - fits easily into a 50l backpack

πŸ–’ Thanks to the poles that build preformed segments extremely fast set up, even in stormy weather!

πŸ–’ Robust materials that withstand intensive use for a long time

πŸ–’ Spacious enough so that backpacks can be taken into the inner tent

πŸ–’ Great "open air" feeling thanks to the different modes of use (without outer tent, partially with outer tent, with outer tent)

CONTRA:

πŸ–“ The outer tent could be cut a little longer.

On the one hand, good ventilation allows no condensation to form in the inner tent, on the other hand, it can lead to a slight, disturbing air flow in very strong winds

πŸ–“ Due to the thin and feather-light groundsheet, a footprint can be useful on very rocky ground

πŸ–“ A pack sack with tension buckles would have been an advantage to make the pack even smaller

πŸ–“ The vestibule could stretch a bit wider on the sides to provide even more space for shoes, cooking utensils, etc.

What we really like:

β™‘ Zippers glow in the dark: can thus be quickly identified even in the dark.

β™‘  Possibility to cover the inner tent only partially,

a must for stargazers!

β™‘ Lightweight, robust, cleverly designed!

Conclusion:

Our opinion is unanimous: the Lyra II tent is a true lightweight in the trekking category, which fulfills its purpose perfectly and provides comfortable accommodation even in bad weather in alpine terrain. It proves itself especially through the thoughtful and spacious construction, the quick setup, as well as feather-light yet particularly robust materials.

We recommend the tent for all those who are on trekking, cycling or canoeing adventures with a lot of luggage and need a light accommodation, as well as for adventurers who are looking for a tent that can withstand strong weather (wind and rain). We further agree that in the event of an emergency even a third person would find accommodation in the 2-person variant

(just be aware that it will be particularly cozy ;)).

Manufacturer's specs:

"The Lyra II is a lightweight, freestanding and affordable 2 people, 3 season shelter for trekking and backpacking. With 2 entrances and 2 vestibules, it's easy to get in and out, plus there's plenty of room for gear. The poles on the inner tent make it easy to set up without the outer tent. The individual pole segments are joined together by an elastic cord to form a closed matrix, which speeds up pitching. Solid, lightweight gussets reinforce the joints and prevent the outer tent from wearing out at these critical points. Multiple set-up and deployment modes allow the Lyra to adapt to different conditions and personal preferences for optimal comfort."
